Two thousand years ago Magi from the east came to Jerusalem asking for the one who had been born King of the Jews. They came to worship Jesus, bringing him gifts.
Today, things are turned upside down, and instead of honoring the King people are honoring themselves and worshipping a made-up figure that totally distorts the meaning of Christmas. Jesus is the Reason for the Season, but he gets pushed back in a corner, if even in a corner.
Here is the craziest, most outrageous thing I’ve heard in a long time. Some friends of a friend of my daughter have budgeted one thousand dollars apiece for Christmas presents for their daughters! Either they are millionaires or they are digging themselves in a big hole! Those people need a reality check! For many people in this country that is their monthly budget!
What’s craziest about it? One of their girls said that if she got a lap-top for Christmas she would continue believing in Santa Claus. So what do these crazy parents do? They buy her a lap-to! What a tragedy if their girl stopped believing in Santa!
At the beginning of what will be a busy day taking care of my grandchildren I feel the need of reminding us of who the focus for our worship is to be. Worship has gone so wrong when commercialism has become the Reason for the Season. Jesus, the King, is the only one we should worship.
“Come, let us bow down in worship, let us kneel before the Lord our maker… worship at his footstool; he is holy” (Ps 95:6; 99:5).
Who is your main focus? Let Jesus take center stage in all you do. To him be “praise and honor and glory and power, for ever and ever” (Rev 5:13).
