With Jesus in the Furnace

The following article is my Thanksgiving activity. I spent a wonderful day in fellowship with my Lord Jesus, marveling at how amazing it must have been for the three brave Hebrew men to walk around with Jesus in a blazing furnace.

The furnace

One of the most amazing miracles we read about in the Bible is when King Nebuchadnezzar commissioned the building of a statue of gold, ninety feet high and three feet wide. He sent messengers and called all the officials and rulers in all the provinces of the kingdom to come together for the inauguration.

He ordered that everyone should fall down and worship the statue. Anyone who disobeyed his command would immediately be thrown into a blazing furnace.

Would anyone dare to disobey this mighty king and his command? To be thrown into a burning furnace doesn’t sound very appealing!

But there were three brave Jewish men–Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego–, who did not worship the king’s gods and they did not worship the great statue that Nebuchadnezzar had set up.

“What god will be able to save you from my power”, asked the king when these brave men stood firm in their convictions about not worshiping the statue. They worshiped only the living God.

“The God we serve is able to save us from the furnace. He will save us from your power, O king. But even if God does not save us, we want you, O king, to know this: We will not serve your gods or worship the gold statue you have set up.”

Nebuchadnezzar was angry! He was not used to being defied! He commanded that they should heat the furnace seven times hotter than usual. And he gave orders to some of the strongest men in his army to tie up Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego and throw them into the fiery furnace. They tied them up with their clothes on and threw them into the blazing furnace. The heat was so strong that it killed the men who threw the brave trio into the flames.

God did not abandon his faithful servants. Jesus was with them in the furnace! King Nebuchadnezzar became quite alarmed when he saw them.

“Weren’t there three men that we tied up and threw into the fire?” he asked his officials. Certainly, there were three men! But the king saw four men walking freely in the midst of the fire, and they were completely unharmed.

“The fourth looks like a son of the gods!” said the king.

What an experience for Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego! To walk in a blazing furnace with Jesus must have been absolutely fantastic.

  • David killed the giant Goliath who threatened Israel.
  • Daniel slept a night on a pillow of lions.
  • Jonah spent three days in the belly of the fish.
  • Peter walked on the water at Jesus’ command.

The Bible is full of stories about the incredible miracles. To walk in the midst of flames must take the price!
When Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego walked out of the fire, all the king’s counselors gathered to see the miracle with their own eyes. The fire had done no damage to the brave men. Their hair was not singed, and their clothing did not even smell burnt!

Then and there the king changed his tune! Nebuchadnezzar praised the God of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, and he commanded that if anyone dared say anything against Him, they would be torn to pieces, and their houses would be made into rubble. “No other god can save in this way,” admitted the King. Then he promoted Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego to high-ranking posts in the province of Babylon.

I would appreciate your prayers as Cristina and I will be preparing lessons for Vacation Bible School this coming month of December. South of the Equator summer is coming and school will be out. Many will be looking for materials for VBS.

Daniel imagenesDaniel and His Friends is the subject for the lesson.
