(A true story from Ica, Peru.) Dreams do come true! It doesn’t matter if they are dreams of a poor boy in a poor neighborhood, the son of a “poor” pastor. That is what the kids in the church thought. But Carlos Espejo might be considered a poor pastor (as in materials possessions) by those looking on, but they were not poor in what God considers riches. I remember Carlos very well from my time as missionary in Peru and Bolivia.
Carlos’ son, also called Carlos, was made fun of by the kids in his Sunday school class because of what he was asking God to give him. The teacher would ask the children what they wanted for Christmas, and she asked what Carlos had asked from God. Carlos always answered, “A Honda motorcycle.”
“A Honda motorcycle!” the kids laughed. One of the kids said, “Are you crazy?” Not in a million years could your dad buy you one! He is even poorer than my dad!” But Carlos wasn’t asking his “poor” pastor dad for the bike; He was asking God, the owner of the Universe!
God didn’t give him a bike right away. Kids can’t have motorcycles. But God did answer this boy’s prayer. That is what my story is about this week. When I get the English version done, I’ll put a link to it here. It’s amazing!
Carlos is now a pastor himself and he proudly drives around in his Honda motorcycle, a red one, just like he had wished for as a kid. He pastors a church in the jungles of Peru. He loves to take the kids on hikes and he shares with them the La Perlita stories I publish weekly.
Cristina has drawn the cutest picture to go with the story. I love it. Now I have to get busy putting each piece together. Story in b/w, story in color, poster, coloring page, activity page… upload on the web. Send the story for translations. Prepare all the pieces for my friends that will do the English. Yes! Praise the Lord! God has answered my prayers and send someone who will do the English version. I also want to do it in Swedish.
Dreams do come true! And God answers prayer! Even the prayer of a “poor” boy in a poor neighborhood. I don’t think God cares one bit about those outward conditions. Man looks at the outside; God looks at the heart.
Here are pictures from the 20th Anniversary of the church Carlos pastors today. Those people love extreme decorations. They know how to enjoy themselves. They know how to praise God for the miracles he does in their lives. This church is in Yurinaqui.
Blessings for you today. Don’t give up on your prayers. Sometimes the answer comes in what we consider “late.” But that is just us. God’s timing is always perfect. Pray and dream. Don’t worry about what others think. Carlos kept his dream alive. Pray for Carlos and the children in Yurinaqui!
