The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel” (which means “God with us”). Matthew 1:23
I can’t think of three more meaningful words: GOD WITH US!
That is what this Season is all about, but it has been turned upside down and the Lord is all but forgotten amongst the hustle and bustle. Santa Claus has taken center stage. Presents and parties are on people’s minds. But JESUS is the Reason for the Season.
I have a treasured picture form a Christmas presentation in which I held the “J” for JESUS. This was the Christmas we spent in Canada, at the church where God called me into missionary service. I had a vision of Jesus surrounded by children the color of boys and girls in South America, and he asked me if I would go to tell them of his love. I answered a joyous “yes” to the call. And I have dedicated my life to bring the Gospel to boys and girls. And that’s what I’m doing now, spending my retiree years publishing lessons and stories about JESUS.
Both Joseph and Mary were instructed to give Immanuel the name Jesus, because “he will save his people from their sins” (see Matthew 1:21 & Luke 1:31).
Immanuel = God with us
Keep those three words in the front of your mind (not in the back) and let the Holy Spirit speak to your heart about the great wonder of the Christmas story.
Here are some more wonderful names of our Savior:
Prince of Peace
For to us a child is born,
to us a son is given,
and the government will be on his shoulders.
And he will be called
Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
Of the greatness of his government and peace
there will be no end.
He will reign on David’s throne
and over his kingdom,
establishing and upholding it
with justice and righteousness
from that time on and forever.
The zeal of the Lord Almighty
will accomplish this. (Isaiah 9:6,7)
May you rejoice abundantly in celebrating the birth of our Lord and Savior!
